Box Score Detroit, Mich. – A 6-0 run to open the second half proved to be the difference, as Furman downed Detroit Mercy 12-6 for the Paladins' first ASUN win of the season. The win moves Furman to 5-4 on the year and 1-1 in ASUN play, while the loss drops the Titans to 2-8 and 0-3 in ASUN play.
Paige Gamble led Furman offensively with three goals and two assists for a team-high five points, while also winning a team-high three draws. Meg Lingo added three goals of her own, while Abby Shields tallied two goals and an assist for three points. Maggie Friel picked up her first conference win of the season in goal, making eight saves on the afternoon.
The Paladins took an early 2-0 lead on back-to-back goals by Lingo and Ashley Trice in the game's first five minutes. The Titans responded to cut the lead to one, before Kasie Lilly netted her second goal of the season to put Furman up 3-1 with just under 20 minutes to go in the half. The Titans used back-to-back goals to tie the game at three, before Lingo scored her second goal of the day to put the Paladins back on top with 10:38 remaining in the half. Detroit Mercy then used back-to-back goals, including one with just 56 seconds to go, to take a 5-4 lead, but Gamble picked up her first goal of the afternoon with 14 seconds remaining to send the teams to the locker rooms tied at five.
The Paladins used a 6-0 run in the first 17 minutes of the second half to put the game away, before the Titans got on the board with under nine minutes to go to cut the lead to 11-6. Alyssa Cooper put the exclamation point on the victory for Furman, netting the Paladins' 12th goal of the game with seven seconds to go.
Detroit Mercy was led by Kelsi Pritchard with three goals on the afternoon, while Lexie Kinmond added two assists.
Furman is back in action on Sunday, taking on Central Michigan at 10:30 a.m. in Mount Pleasant, Mich.
