Comeback Bid Falls Short at No. 3 Penn State on Tuesday

University Park, Pa. – Down 11-5 with 3:00 remaining in the third period, Furman lacrosse mounted a furious comeback to cut the lead to one with just under five minutes to go. However, Penn State was able to hold the possession and take a two-goal lead with 44 seconds on the clock to down the Paladins, 12-10, on Tuesday afternoon. The win moves the Nittany Lions to 6-0 on the year, while the loss drops the Paladins to 1-6.

Furman was led on offense by Lou Yovino with three goals, while William Holcomb added three points (2 G, 1 A). Zach Scott dished out a team-high two assist, while reigning SoCon Defensive Player of the Week Alec Van de Bovenkamp made seven saves.

Penn State opened up a one-goal lead on the Paladins just two minutes into the game, before Scott found Stephen Wierzbicki to tie the score at one at the 10:30 mark of the first period. The Nittany Lions then netted back-to-back goals to take a 3-1 lead to the second quarter.

William Holcomb picked up his tenth goal of the year to cut the PSU lead to one at 3-2, but the Nittany Lions netted four-straight goals over the next four minutes to push the lead to 7-2. Lou Yovino ended the scoring run with his first goal of the day to send the teams to the lockerroom with Penn State holding a 7-3 advantage.

Graham Dabbs opened the second half with a man-up goal on an assist from Finn Barry to cut the lead to 7-4, before Penn State regained the four-goal advantage with 10:43 remaining in the third. Yovino picked up his second goal of the day on an assist from Jonah Moore to cut the lead to 8-5, but Penn State netted three-straight over the next four minutes to push the lead to six at 11-5. The Paladins picked up some momentum, however, as Holcomb's second score of the day cut the lead to 11-6 with just seven seconds to go in the third period.

The Paladins continued to chip into the lead, as Wierzbicki's second goal of the day cut the lead to 11-7 and Yovino's third score of the afternoon cut the lead to 11-8. David Williamson scored an unassisted goal to cut the lead to two at 11-9 with 8:57 to go. Penn State won the ensuing faceoff, but the Paladins forced a turnover to regain possession. Then, with 4:43 to go, Jonah Moore turned in an unassisted goal to cut the Nittany Lions' lead to one at 11-10. Furman won the ensuing faceoff, but after a PSU save on a David Williamson attempt, the Nittany Lions were able to run time off the clock with a long possession, scoring with just five seconds on the shot clock to put the game out of reach at 12-10 and end Furman's comeback hopes.

Penn State was led by Nick Spillane, Kevin Hill, and Dan Craig with two goals each, while Nick Aponte dished out four assists. Colby Kneese picked up the win with eight saves, while Gerard Arceri and Billy Lombardi combined to go 17-25 from the faceoff 'X'.

The Paladins are back in action on March 18, when they begin SoCon play by welcoming Bellarmine into Paladin Stadium.
