Men's Lacrosse Downs High Point to Remain Unbeaten in SoCon Play

High Point, N.C. -- Behind four goals from David Williamson and a five-goal fourth quarter, Furman held off a rally and downed High Point, 13-8, on Saturday. With the win, Furman moves to 6-6 on the year and remains unbeaten in SoCon play (5-0), while the loss drops High Point to 3-9 and 1-4 in SoCon play.

 

Williamson led all scorers with four goals and also added an assist for a game-high five points. Jonah Moore added two goals and two assists on the afternoon for four points, while reigning SoCon Player of the Week Lou Yovino added two goals. Alec Van de Bovenkamp picked up his fifth SoCon win of the year in goal, making seven saves on the afternoon.


Furman opened the game on a 5-0 scoring run, before High Point cut the lead to 5-1 with 10:33 remaining in the second period. The Paladins responded with David Williamson's second goal of the day, before the Panthers got a goal with one second on the clock to send the teams to halftime with Furman on top 6-2.


The Panthers cut the lead to 6-3 under one minute into the third, before Furman used back-to-back goals to push the lead to 8-3 with 10:00 to go in the period. High Point then rallied for four-straight goals to cut Furman's lead to one after three periods.

 

The Paladins used a goal by Stephen Wierzbicki to push the lead back to two with 13:10 remaining in the fourth, then got a man-up goal by Williamson to take a 10-7 advantage under a minute later. Furman again capitalized on an extra man opportunity, getting a goal from Graham Dabbs to push the lead to 11-7 with 11:42 remaining. Following a High Point timeout with 6:15 remaining, Jon Vandenberg caused a High Point turnover to end the Panthers' scoring opportunity, however, the Paladins' couldn't capitalize and gave the ball back to HPU, which used a goal by Nick Basile to cut the lead to 11-8 with 4:42 to go. Following a High Point save, Wierzbicki picked up the ground ball and found Jonah Moore to push Furman's lead back to four at 12-8 with 3:41 to go. The Paladins then got a goal from Joe Stone to ice the win and defeat High point, 13-8.

 

Furman is back in action on Saturday, April 22, playing host to VMI for a 12:00 p.m. Senior Day game inside Paladin Stadium.
