Box Score Mount Pleasant, Mich. – Ashley Trice scored five goals on six shots and Furman held off a late Central Michigan surge to down the Chippewas, 12-11, on Sunday afternoon. The win, Furman's second of the weekend, moves the Paladins to 6-4 on the year and 2-1 in ASUN play, while the loss drops Central Michigan to 4-7 on the year and 1-3 in ASUN play.
Trice netted a season-high five goals on six shots, while also added an assist for a team-high six points on the afternoon. Abby Shields added two goals and an assist for three points, while Paige Gamble tallied one goal and a team-high three assists. Gamble won a team-high seven draws, while Samantha Eckels picked up five groundballs on the afternoon. Maggie Friel earned her second conference win of the season in goal, making eight saves.
Central Michigan took a 1-0 lead on a free position attempt just 2:30 in, but Furman responded with back-to-back goals by Trice and Kasie Lilly to take a 2-1 lead. The teams then traded goals until Central Michigan got a score from Kylee Frazier with just four seconds remaining to give the Chippewas a 5-4 lead heading into halftime.
The teams again traded goals to open the second half, before Central Michigan opened its biggest lead of the afternoon at 9-6, following a three-goal run. The Paladins would not go away, however, rallying for a 6-0 scoring run over the next 10 minutes of game time to take a three-goal lead of their own at 12-9 with 7:51 remaining. Central Michigan used back-to-back goals by Riley Huda to cut the lead to one with 2:32 to go, but the Paladins were able to win the ensuing draw and maintain possession for the rest of the game, giving Furman the 12-11 win.
Furman is back in action on Friday, April 7 at 6:00 p.m., opening a five-game homestand with Old Dominion.
