Box Score Greenville, S.C. – A 7-0 first quarter gave Furman a lead it would never relinquish, as the Paladins downed VMI, , on senior day in Paladin Stadium. The win moves Furman to 7-6 on the year and 6-0 in SoCon play, while the loss drops the Keydets to 2-11 and 0-6 in SoCon play. The win also gives Furman an undefeated home conference record in 2017.
Senior Stephen Wierzbicki led Furman with four goals and an assist in his final game in Paladin Stadium, while fellow senior Matt Geran added three fourth-quarter goals. Jonah Moore tallied a goal and a game-high four assists on the afternoon, while senior Chase Hancock added two goals and an assist.
Furman opened up a 4-0 lead in the game's first 10 minutes, including two goals by David Williamson. Graham Dabbs and Stephen Wierzbicki each added to Furman's lead to push the score to 6-0 with 3:03 remaining in the first, prompting VMI to call its first timeout. Following the timeout, William Holcomb added a goal to push Furman's lead to 7-0 after one.
Jonah Moore stretched Furman's lead to 8-0 with 10:00 remaining in the second, before VMI got on the board with a goal with 4:37 to go in the half. Neither team could capitalize on scoring opportunities and headed to halftime with Furman holding an 8-1 advantage.
VMI cut Furman's lead to 8-2 to open the half, before Wierzbicki picked up his third goal of the day, giving Furman the 9-2 advantage. Gus Pinsoneault then netted his first goal of the day to give Furman the 10-2 lead, before Wierzbicki netted his fourth goal of the afternoon to give the Paladins an 11-2 lead. Chase Hancock became the ninth Paladin to register in the scoring column, giving Furman a 13-2 lead after three.
The Paladins continued to add to the lead, opening the fourth with three-straight goals, including back-to-back goals by senior Matt Geran, his first of the year, pushing the lead to 16-2. VMI cut Furman's lead to 16-3 with just over five minutes remaining, before Geran completed the fourth-quarter hat trick, stretching Furman's lead back to 14 at 17-3 with 3:42 to go. Senior Ty Randell then netted his first goal of the year, giving Furman the 18-3 victory on senior day.
The Paladins are back in action next Saturday, closing out the regular season at Richmond.
