Box Score SoCon Tournament Bracket
Richmond, Va. – A five-goal halftime deficit proved to be too much for the Paladins to overcome, as Furman fell 13-4 at #17 Richmond on Saturday afternoon. The win finishes the Spiders' regular season with an 11-3 overall record and 6-1 mark in SoCon play, while the loss drops Furman to 7-7 on the year and 6-1 in SoCon play.
Furman, Richmond, and Air Force all earn a share of the Southern Conference regular season title. Using SoCon tie-breaking procedures, Air Force has earned the No. 1 seed next week's SoCon Tournament, while Richmond will be the No. 2 seed and the Paladins the No. 3 seed.
Four different Paladins combined to tally the four Furman goals on the afternoon, including freshman Lou Yovino, who, with today's goal, has now scored in every game in his freshman campaign. Alec Van de Bovenkamp picked up his first career SoCon loss in goal, despite making 11 saves on the afternoon.
The Spiders opened a four-goal lead over the Paladins to start the game, before William Holcomb got Furman on the board with just over five minutes remaining in the first. Richmond responded with JP Forester's third goal of the day to push the lead to 5-1, then was held to just one goal in the second period, giving the Spiders the 6-1 halftime advantage.
Richmond kept Furman off the board for the second-straight period and used five goals to stretch the lead to 11-1 heading into the fourth. The Paladins finally found some offensive momentum, using three-straight goals to cut the lead to 11-4 with 9:16 remaining, but the Spiders got back-to-back goals from Patrick Shea and Elliot Dennis to give Richmond the 13-4 win.
Furman is back in action on Thursday, May 4, opening SoCon Tournament play against No. 2 seed Richmond at 7:30 p.m. The game will take place inside Richmond's home stadium, the site of the 2017 SoCon Tournament and is set to be streamed live on the SoCon Digital Network.
