Box Score Chapel Hill, N.C. – An 8-1 run over two quarters gave the Paladins the 14-13 advantage with just over two minutes remaining in regulation, but the ninth-ranked Tar Heels scored the final two goals of the game to ruin the Furman comeback and take the 15-14 win on Saturday afternoon. The victory moves the Tar Heels to 2-0 on the season, while the loss drops the Paladins to 0-2.
William Holcomb led the Paladins with three goals on the day, while David Williamson, Zach Scott and Chad Kreuzer each added two. Jonah Moore, Jarrett Birch, Gus Pinsoneault, Mike Liscombe, and Carson Sorrells added one apiece. In addition, Moore set a school record with six assists on the day, while Birch, Keegan Pearl and Williamson each added one. Alec Van de Bovenkamp played 60:31 in goal for the Paladins, making a season-high 13 saves.
North Carolina opened the scoring with a goal just under four minutes into the game, before the Paladins responded with four-straight goals, including two by Holcomb, to take a 4-1 lead with 3:30 remaining in the first. The Tar Heels responded with eight unanswered goals to take a 9-4 lead with 6:00 to go in the first half, before Kreuzer scored his first goal of the day to cut the lead to 9-5 heading into halftime.
North Carolina opened the third quarter with a 3-1 scoring run to take a 12-6 lead with 5:09 to go. The Paladins rallied, however, rattling off three-straight goals to end the period and cut the lead to 12-9.
Furman cut the lead to 12-10 on a goal by Jonah Moore with 12:32 remaining in the game, before North Carolina pushed the lead back to three with 10:00 to go. Furman continued to rally, however, using three-straight goals to tie the game at 13-13 with 5:09 remaining. Mike Liscombe then scored his first goal of the season, a man-up opportunity, with 2:09 to go to give the Paladins the 14-13 advantage.
The Tar Heels scored with 1:16 to go to send the game to overtime, then scored 30 seconds in to take the game, 15-14.
North Carolina was led offensively by Christ Cloutier and Tanner Cook with five goals each. Luke Millican played 54:51 in goal for the Tar Heels, making nine saves.
Furman is back in action next Saturday, February 17, taking on Sacred Heart at 11:00 a.m. at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md.
