Furman Drops Overtime Heartbreaker to Canisius

Philadelphia, Pa. – Down 6-2 after the first quarter, Canisius rallied back to take a 13-12 lead late in the fourth, but Furman used a goal from William Holcomb to send the game to overtime, but the Golden Griffins scored the game-winner just over a minute into OT to hand the Paladins the heartbreaking 14-13 loss. The win moves Canisius to 2-1 on the season, while the loss drops the Paladins to 0-4. 

David Williamson tallied four goals on the afternoon, while William Holcomb added three goals and an assist. Jarrett Birtch tallied a goal and three assists, while Zach Scott dished out two assists of his own. Alec Van de Bovenkamp played all 60 minutes in goal, making 12 saves.

Furman jumped out to a 2-0 lead, before Canisius used back-to-back goals to tie the game at two with under 11 minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Paladins responded with five-straight goals to close out the first quarter and start the second, taking a 7-2 advantage. Canisius ended the first half on a 3-1 run to cut the lead to 8-5 at halftime.

Furman pushed the lead to 9-5 to open the third quarter, but Canisius responded with with back-to-back goals to cut the lead to 9-7, before the Paladins pushed the lead back to four at 11-7 with 4:00 to go in the third. Canisius used three-straight goals to close out the third quarter and start the fourth, to cut the lead to one at 11-10. The Paladins kept the Golden Griffins at bay with a goal by William Holcomb to push the lead to 12-10 with 10:27 to go. Canisius responded with three-straight goals to take its first lead of the game at 13-12, before Holcomb netted his third goal of the day to send the game to overtime, tied 13-13.

Canisius got a goal from Steven Coss 1:14 into overtime to take it, 14-13.

Furman is back in action on Saturday, March 3, hosting Denver inside Paladin Stadium.
