GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Three Paladin indoor track and field records fell on Friday, as Furman competed at both the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, and at the Samford University Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.
In Iowa at one of the country's premier meets, senior Frank Lara posted a time of 13:56.17 in the 5,000m, shattering the previous record of 14:13.42 set by Tanner Hinkle at the same meet last season. Lara placed fifth in the event, while freshman Daniel Bernal was 27th with a time of 14:17.75, and sophomore Mason Coppi turned in a time of 14:21.17 for 27th place.
On the women's side, sophomore Emma Grace Hurley finished 11th with a time of 9:22.82 in the 3,000m, and sophomore Savannah Carnahan was 14th with a time of 16:14.49 in the 5,000m Invitational race. Sophomore Grace Dwyer posted a time of 17:00.54 for 12th in the 5,000m open race. The times for all three women were personal bests.
Two records were broken at Samford. Freshman Kristlin Gear won the women's 800m with a time of 2:07.14, breaking her previous school record time of 2:08.18 which she set last month at Vanderbilt. The Paladins took the top three places in the event, as sophomore Riley Burr was second at 2:10.78, followed by freshman Emma Kuntz with a time of 2:12.76.
The Paladin women's 4x400m relay team of Burr, Jacquelyn Crow, Gear, and Kuntz set a new Paladin record with a time of 3:54.56, breaking a Furman best that had stood for 12 years. The previous record of 3:56.87 was set by Kristen Edgar, Mary Jo Handley, McKenzie Sharpe, and Rebecca Mullen in 2006.
Also at Samford, sophomore Gabrielle Jennings won the mile with a time of 4:46.18, setting a new meet record. Crow was third in the event at 5:04.09. Freshman Reilly Caldwell was second in the 3,000m with a time of 9:55.15.
On the men's side, sophomore Jake Ogden won the 800m with a time of 1:53.92, and freshmen Trent Mandato and Allen Clark went 1-2 with personal bests in the 3,000m. Mandato notched a time of 8:33.15, followed by Clark at 8:39.33.
The Paladins will compete at the UCS Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., and at the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind., next weekend.
