Men's Lacrosse Tops Richmond in Saturday Thriller

Box Score

Greenville, S.C. – A four-goal third quarter proved to be the difference, as Furman men's lacrosse downed Richmond, 10-9, on Saturday inside Paladin Stadium for the Paladins' first win of 2018 and the first win over Richmond in school history. The victory moves Furman to 1-6 on the year and 1-0 in SoCon play, while the loss drops the Spiders to 4-4 and 1-1 in SoCon play.

With three seconds to go in regulation, a penalty was called on the Paladins, giving the Spiders the ball and a chance to send the game to overtime. Richmond got a look, but Alec Van de Bovenkamp came up with his biggest stop of the day as time expired to secure the win for Furman.

The Paladins used a balanced offensive attack on Saturday, tallying seven-different goal scorers, while three different players added an assist. Sage Rieth won a season-high 16 face-offs and Van de Bovenkamp made 16 saves on the day.

Furman got on the board early, winning the opening faceoff and racing down the field to take a 1-0 lead just 12 seconds in on a goal by Finn Barry. The Spiders responded with back-to-back goals, however, to take a 2-1 lead after the first quarter. Furman used back-to-back goals by Gus Pinsoneault and William Holcomb to regain the lead at 3-2 with 9:30 to go in the first half, before the Spiders again responded with back-to-back goals to take a 4-3 lead.

The Paladins again used back-to-back goals in under 60 seconds to take the lead back from Richmond, 5-4. With two-straight goals, it appeared as if Richmond was going to take a 6-4 lead into halftime, but Furman got a goal by Jarrett Birch with six seconds remaining to send the teams to the locker rooms locked in a 6-6 tie.

Coupled with a strong defensive effort to hold Richmond off the board, Furman used four-straight goals in the third quarter to take a 10-6 lead with 15:00 to go. The Spiders held Furman scoreless in the fourth quarter and netted three-straight goals to cut the lead to 10-9 with just under 7:00 remaining. The Paladins held strong on defense, however, fending off any opportunity Richmond had to tie the game. Van de Bovenkamp's save as time expired ended the Spiders' chances and gave Furman the 10-9 win.

Richmond was led on offense by Mitch Savoca and Mitch Goldberg, while Blake Goodman made seven saves in goal.

The Paladins are back in action on Saturday, March 24, for a 12:00 p.m. matchup at VMI.
