RALEIGH, N.C. -- Sophomore Emma Grace Hurley established a new Paladin record in the women's 3,000m Steeplechase, and senior Allie Buchalski set a new Furman record in the women's 1,500m to lead the Paladin track and field teams in the 2018 outdoor season opener Friday at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C. 

Hurley won the 3,000m Steeplechase event with a time of 10:06.35, knocking almost seven seconds off the previous Paladin best of 10:13.10, set by Buchalski in 2015.  Furman rookie Kristlin Gear finished second with a time of 10:12.72 in her first collegiate race in the event, giving the Paladin duo the top two times in the nation.  Sophomore Gabrielle Jennings was seventh in the Steeplechase at 10:23.43, and sophomore Riley Burr posted a time of 11:10.38 for 32nd place.

Buchalski crossed the line in 4:19.24, taking ninth place in the 1,500m and breaking the previous Furman record of 4:21.68, which Jennings set last season.  Following the race, Buchalski paced sophomore Savannah Carnahan to a third-place finish and personal-best time of 15:49.89 in the 5,000m.  

For the men's team, sophomore Mason Coppi placed 15th with a personal-best time of 14:10.31, while senior Aaron Templeton finished 19th in the event after posting a personal-best time of 14:14.39.  Sophomore Jake Ogden was 21st in the 1,500m with a personal-best time of 3:49.28, and senior Frank Lara scored an 19th-place finish with a time of 29:35.12 in the 10,000m.

Furman will compete in the second day of the Raleigh Relays and at the Terrier Relays in Spartanburg, S.C., on Saturday.
