Men's Soccer Clips ETSU In Annual Quinn Game, 1-0

Joash Nets Fourth Goal Of The Season

Greenville, S.C. – Freshman Shaun-Chris Joash scored with less than two minutes left in the first half to propel Furman men's soccer to a 1-0 victory over ETSU in the fifth annual "Quinn Game" for Down Syndrome Awareness Saturday evening on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium.

With the victory in the Southern Conference opener, Furman improved to 7-5-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. ETSU slipped to 3-6-2 overall and 0-1 in the SoCon.

"We're proud to be able to win the Quinn Game tonight," said Paladin head coach Doug Allison. "Shaun-Chris Joash scored a great goal to get us going before the half. It was great to see so many former players and their families here. They really helped make it a great atmosphere."

In the final 90 seconds of the first half, Alfredo Diaz-Santillan played Cole McLagan free down the right wing before the Lee's Summit, Mo., native sent a centering pass into the box for Joash. The Hampton Hill, England product turned to create space and fired a low strike inside the near post for his fourth goal of the season at the 43:47 mark.

ETSU threatened several times in the second half. Early in the final 45 minutes, Jeremiah Edouard made dangerous runs down the right flank, but he fired wide on his first chance and Furman cleared a cross from the box on his second run. Gilbert Miller broke free behind the Paladin defense midway through the period, but Furman's Max Fisher made the one-on-one save and smothered the loose ball before Miller could tee up his teammate for a shot at the open net.

Fisher, a senior from Salisbury, N.C., stopped three shots to secure his second shutout of the season, while ETSU's Josh Perryman turned away six shots for the Buccaneers.

Furman managed an 11-9 advantage in total shots, including a 7-3 margin in shots on goal.

The Paladins continue SoCon play with a 4 p.m. kickoff versus the VMI Keydets in Lexington, Va., on Tuesday before returning to Stone Stadium to host UNC Greensboro on Tuesday, October 22.
