SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- FCS 21st-ranked Wofford scored 24 unanswered points to down 7th-ranked Furman, 24-7, in Southern Conference action Saturday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium.
With the loss, which halted a six-game Southern Conference road streak for Furman (7-4, 6-2), the Paladins fell to second place in the league with only next Saturday's non-conference home game remaining on the regular season schedule.
The win, coupled with Chattanooga's 34-33 home victory over The Citadel, gave Wofford (7-3, 6-1 SoCon) the league championship and SoCon's automatic bid to the FCS playoffs, which get underway on Nov. 30. The Terriers can claim the outright title next Saturday with road victory over The Citadel in Charleston.
The Terriers made two fourth down stops inside the three-yard line in the second half and held the Paladins to just 265 yards of total offense in claiming their seventh straight win over Furman in Spartanburg.
