Bothwell, Mounce Pace Paladins To Victory At Elon, 97-61

Furman Drains 17 Three-Pointers In Tuesday's Victory

Elon, N.C. – Sophomore Mike Bothwell scored a career-high 20 points and Clay Mounce drained six three-pointers to reach 20 points as Furman raced past Elon, 97-61, in the mainland portion of the Bad Boy Mowers Battle 4 Atlantis Tuesday evening at the Schar Center in Elon, N.C.

The win marked the Paladins' third consecutive over Elon and improved Furman to 6-1 on the season. The Phoenix slipped to 2-5.

Bothwell and Mounce each connected on three first half three-point tries to score 15 and 11 points, respectively, to help Furman build a 46-30 lead at the break. After holding Elon without a field goal in the final 6:13 of the first half, the Paladins opened the final 20 minutes on a 10-0 run and held the Phoenix without a basket until the 15:34 mark of the second half to stretch the Elon drought to 10:39. The 10-0 run, which included back-to-back triples from Mounce, extended the Paladin lead to 56-30.

Elon trimmed the Furman lead down to 76-57 with under six minutes to play, but the Paladins finished on a 21-4 run for the final 36-point margin. Furman shot 52.9% for the game and connected on 17-of-37 three-point attempts to tie a school record for the most made triples versus an NCAA Division I opponent. Previously, the Paladins made 17 treys versus Davidson in 2005, The Citadel in 2018 and UNC Wilmington last December.

Bothwell added six rebounds and five assists to go with his 20 points, while Mounce snagged seven boards, dished out three assists and notched a career-high five steals. Alex Hunter and Jordan Lyons also reached double figures with 13 points apiece.

Furman outscored the Phoenix 32-18 in the paint, 23-11 on points off turnovers and 12-0 in transition. The Paladins bench finished with 36 of Furman's season-high 97 points.

Hunter McIntosh led Elon with 13 points, but the Phoenix shot just 35.3% and Furman limited leading scorer Marcus Sheffield to just two points.
