CLARKSVILE, TENN. – No. 17 Austin Peay advanced to the second round of the FCS playoffs with a 42-6 victory over 16th-ranked Furman Saturday afternoon at Fortera Stadium.

The Governors (10-3) advance to face No. 4 seed Sacramento State in the round of 16 next Saturday evening in Sacramento, Calif. Furman finishes the 2019 season at 8-5.

After leading 7-3 at the half, Austin Peay scored 21 points in the opening 4:23 of the second half and 28 points total in the third quarter to take command, 35-3. JaVaughn Craig tossed a pair of third-quarter touchdowns, including a 75-yard catch and run by Kente Williams, who added a one-yard touchdown plunge in the quarter.

Furman's Grayson Atkins connected on a pair of field goals in the loss.

After a one-hour and 32 minute delay due to lightning, the Paladins forced an Austin Peay punt and covered 48 yards in 13 plays, advancing to the Governors' 24-yard line before a personal foul penalty backed the Paladins up to the Austin Peay 42, where Atkins' 59-yard field goal had the distance but missed left of the upright.

The third quarter proved to be all Austin Peay as the Governors took the kickoff and covered 70 yards in four plays for a 16-yard scoring strike from JaVaughn Craig to DeAngel Wilson to make it 14-3.

A little over two minutes later the Governors struck again when Craig dumped a short pass over the middle to Kente Williams, who broke outside and outraced Furman's pursuit for a 73-yard touchdown catch and run that helped stretch the lead to 21-3.

Austin Peay finished with 434 yards in total offense to Furman's 227.  The Paladins suffered three turnovers.
