GREENVILLE, S.C. --
Devin Wynn rushed for four touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass to help FCS ninth-ranked Furman overwhelm VMI, 60-21, in Southern Conference action Saturday afternoon at Paladin Stadium.
The win, the third straight and sixth in the last seven games for Furman (7-3, 6-1 SoCon), maintained the Paladins' half game lead over Wofford for first place in the SoCon. The Paladins and Terriers play next Saturday in Spartanburg, S.C., in a 1:30 contest at Gibbs Stadium, where a victory would secure Furman the 2019 SoCon championship.
Wynn, a junior tailback, scored the Paladins' first four touchdowns, crossing the goal line on runs of 1, 1, and 2 yards before tallying on a 2-yard, late second quarter touchdown reception . The Greensboro, Ga., product capped his day with a 59-yard scoring burst a minute into the fourth quarter, finishing with 15 carries for 102 yards.
Furman combined a lethal offense that generated 636 total yards with its fourth second half defensive shutout of the season, spiced by three forced turnovers and four sacks, en route to its fifth consecutive victory over VMI (4-6, 3-4 SoCon).
Making his first career start, redshirt freshman quarterback
Hamp Sisson, who last week came off the bench to rally Furman to a 35-20 road victory over Chattanooga, proved very efficient, completing 17-of-22 passes for 277 yards and two touchdowns in two and a half quarters of work. The Birmingham, Ala., native also added 39 yards rushing for the Paladins, who compiled 298 yards on the ground while passing for a season high 338 yards.
Senior wide receiver
Thomas Gordon caught a career high 10 passes for 148 yards and in the process moved from fourth to second place on the program's career receiving yards ledger with 2,448 yards.
A pair of Wynn 1-yard touchdown plunges helped stake head coach
Clay Hendrix's Paladins to a 15-0 first quarter lead before VMI got on the board with a 45-yard scoring toss from quarterback Reece Udinski to Jakob Herres.
After VMI cut the lead to 15-14, Wynn answered with his third score of the game, a 4-yard ramble around left end, to stretch the advantage to 21-14.
Leading 22-21, the Paladins used a
Devin Abrams 43-yard run to the VMI 22 to set the table for a strong first half finish. Four consecutive runs by true freshman running back
Dominic Roberto got the Paladins to the VMI 2, where on third down Sisson found Wynn open in the end zone on pick play to make it 29-22 with 1:06 showing on the first half clock.
VMI's attempt for points in the last minute before the break went awry when Paladin cornerback
Darius Kearse stepped in front of a Udinski pass and returned it 13 yards the Furman 49. Three Sisson pass completions got Furman to the 30, where Paladin All-America kicker
Grayson Atkins split the uprights from 48 yards — his 20th made field goal in last 21 attempts — to send the Paladins into the intermission up, 32-21.
Furman put the game away in the second half with a pair of third quarter touchdowns — a 1-yard plunge by Roberto and 71-yard connection from Sisson to
Devin Abrams.
Wynn's 102 rushing yards gave him 882 on the season.
Adrian Hope had two of the Paladins' four sacks to move the Paladin redshirt sophomore bandit into third place on Furman's career sacks list with 20.5
