Elon Slips Past Furman, 87-76, in Overtime

Petty Goes 13-for-13 at Free Throw Line, Falls Two Shy of Tying School Record

Greenville, S.C. – Taylor Petty led four Paladins in double figures with a team-high 19 points on Monday evening as the Furman women's basketball team dropped an 87-76 decision in overtime to the Elon Phoenix at Timmons Arena.

Furman falls to 8-5 on the season while Elon improves to 5-6 overall.

Petty went a perfect 13-for-13 at the free throw line, both career-highs, to lead the Paladins offensively with 19 points while dishing out five assists. Her 13 made free throws fell two shy of tying the program's single-game record of 15. Celena Taborn poured in 17 points on 8-of-10 shooing while Le'Jzae Davidson contributed 16 points and tying her career-high of eight rebounds. Tierra Hodges recorded her team-leading sixth double-double of the season on 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Kayla Liles was one of four Phoenix to score in double figures with a game-high 21 points. Saadia Munford tallied 19 points and Brie Perpignan 14. Ariel Colon posted 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

Furman overcame an 11-point deficit in the third quarter to force overtime, its first since the 2017-18 season, with the score tied 69-69 at the end of regulation. Elon outscored the Paladins 18-7 during the overtime period with nine of those points coming at the free throw line. The Phoenix built a 76-71 lead but Petty knocked down a 3-pointer with 2:27 remaining. Petty kept Furman within two points at the 1:50 mark when her free throws made the score 78-76. Elon closed out the game on a 9-0 run.

The Paladins led by as many as six points in the second quarter when Davidson's 3-pointer with 6:42 to go extended their lead to 26-20. Petty pushed Furman's lead back to three points, 31-28, with 3:52 left after making two free throws. The Phoenix ended the half on a 15-2 run to lead 43-33 at intermission.

The Paladins managed to trim their deficit down to 45-41, capping an 8-2 run, with 8:31 remaining after a 3-pointer by Milica Manojlovic. Elon responded with seven consecutive points to lead 52-41 with 6:41 to go. The Phoenix kept their lead at 11 points, 54-43, with 5:31 remaining. Furman answered defensively over the final five minutes of the third quarter limiting Elon to just two points. The Paladins outscored the Phoenix 13-2 during that stretch to even the score at 56-56 heading to the fourth quarter.

Both teams scored 13 points during a fourth quarter that featured six ties. Furman held a 67-64 lead with 4:31 left on Taborn's layup. Elon made one free throw with 53 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score at 69-69.

The Paladins concluded the game shooting 35.6 percent (21-of-59) from the field and 82.9 percent (29-of-35) at the free throw line. Furman held a 7-6 advantage in fast break points while both teams scored 19 second chance points.

The game featured 11 ties and 11 lead changes.

The Paladins remain at home on Thursday, January 2, to open the New Year hosting Newberry at 7 p.m.
