Greenville, S.C. – Tierra Hodges and
Milica Manojlovic both scored career-highs on Thursday evening as the Furman women's basketball team remained unbeaten at home following a 62-55 victory over the Georgia State Panthers at Timmons Arena.
Furman improves to 5-3 on the season while Georgia State drops to 1-6 overall.
Hodges set a new career-high in points for the second consecutive game after leading the Paladins with 21 points and eight rebounds on a career-best 9-of-12 shooting. Manojlovic had a career-high 19 points and three steals while contributing six assists. The Tivat, Montenegro native was 6-of-11 from the field and posted a career-high 4-of-8 mark behind the 3-point line.
Lindsey Taylor finished with nine points and
Taylor Petty dished out four assists.
Le'Jzae Davidson tied her career-high of eight rebounds.
Taylor Hosendove led three Panthers in double figures after finishing with a double-double of 20 points and 18 rebounds. Allison Johnson posted 12 points and Jada Lewis 10. Tehya Lyons tallied four steals.
Furman led wire-to-wire in the contest and held the lead for a total of 39:15.
The Paladins opened the game on an 11-2 run over the first 4:07 and built a nine-point lead with 5:53 remaining on Petty's layup. Following a Georgia State timeout, the Panthers registered four straight points to trail 11-6. Furman outscored Georgia State 9-4 over the final 4:55 to hold a 20-10 lead. Taylor's two free throws with 1:55 to go gave the Paladins a 10-point advantage.
Neither team scored for over two minutes to begin the second quarter before Hodges' free throw at the 7:51 mark gave Furman a 21-10 lead. The Panthers responded with five straight points and got to within 21-15 at the 6:54 mark. Hodges responded with back-to-back field goals to put the Paladins back in front by double digits, 25-15, with 4:56 remaining. After Georgia State made it a seven-point game, Furman closed out the quarter on a 9-2 run that covered 3:04. Hodges and Manojlovic combined for the final five points with Manojlovic's 3-pointer with two seconds left giving the Paladins a 34-20 lead at halftime.
Furman increased its lead out to 19 points, 41-22, early in the third quarter courtesy of a 7-2 run. Manojlovic gave the Paladins their largest lead of the game, 44-24, with 7:14 to go following her layup. The Panthers got as close as 15 points twice over a stretch of 1:09 with the last coming at 46-31 with 2:01 remaining. Davidson and
Sutton West combined for the final four points with West's put-back layup with one second left making the score 50-31.
Georgia State outscored Furman 24-12 in the fourth quarter highlighted by a 13-2 run over the first 5:21. The Panthers capped the run with 4:39 remaining and trailed 52-44. The Paladins responded with five straight points on a Davidson 3-pointer and Taylor layup to go back in front 57-44 with two minutes left. Georgia State came back with an 11-1 run that covered a stretch of 1:35 and was down by three, 58-55, with 15 seconds remaining. Hodges and Manojlovic scored the game's final four points to secure the 62-55 victory.
Furman concluded the game shooting 44.2 percent (23-of-52) from the field and held an 8-6 advantage in fast break points.
The Paladins defense also limited the Panthers to just 2-of-20 (10.0 percent) shooting behind the 3-point line.
Furman begins a four-game road trip on Sunday, December 8 traveling to face the Richmond Spiders at 5 p.m. in Richmond, Va.
