STANFORD, Calif. -- Sophomore Emma Kuntz established a new program record in the women's 800m, while senior Aaron Templeton obliterated the men's 5,000m record to lead the Furman track and field teams Friday at the Cardinal Classic in Stanford, Calif.
Kuntz crossed the line in 2:06.91, taking third in her heat and seventh overall and breaking her own previous school record of 2:08.96, which she set last outdoor season.
In the men's 5,000m, Templeton finished seventh with a time of 13:39.39, shattering the previous record of 13:59.86, set by Troy Reeder in 2016. Junior Mason Coppi and sophomore Daniel Bernal both notched personal best times in the event. Coppi placed sixth in his heat and 20th overall with a time of 14:02.93, taking eight seconds off his previous personal best, and Bernal notched a time of 14:14.36, two seconds off his best time. Bernal finished 13th in his heat and 30th overall. Senior Frank Lara placed 17th in his heat and 28th overall at 14:11.61.
Also on the women's side, Savannah Carnahan finished as the runner up in the women's 5,000m with a personal-best time of 15:45.10.
Events will continue on Saturday at the Cardinal Classic, with the Paladins competing in the women's and men's Steeplechase at 6:01 p.m. PT and the men's and women's 1,500m at 6:46 p.m. PT.
The Paladins will also compete at the USC Outdoor Open on Saturday. Furman's events in Columbia are slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. with the women's javelin. The final Furman event, the men's 800m, is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
