Furman Comeback Falls Short at Jacksonville

Jacksonville, Fla. – Despite outscoring Jacksonville 6-4 in the second half, Furman could not overcome a 7-4 halftime deficit, falling to the Dolphins 11-10 on Saturday afternoon in Jacksonville. The win moves the Dolphins to 5-8, 4-2 SoCon, on the year, while the loss drops the Paladins to 3-10, 1-5 SoCon. 

Furman was led by Chad Kreuzer with four points on the day (two goals, two assists), while Carson Sorrells added three (two goals, one assist) and Jarret Birch added two goals. Finn Barry picked up a team-high three ground balls, and Alec Van de Bovenkamp made 19 saves on the afternoon.

Jacksonville started the game on fire, taking a 5-0 lead after the game's first 15:00. The teams traded goals to open the second, before Furman used three-straight goals to cut the lead to 6-4 with 3:18 left before halftime. The Dolphins stretched the lead back to three, however, on a goal with just under 2:00 to go, taking the 7-4 lead into halftime.

The teams traded one goal each in the third period, with the Dolphins clinging to an 8-5 lead heading to the fourth, before Jarrett Birch netted back-to-back goals to open the final period for the Paladins, cutting the Jacksonville lead to one at 8-7 with 13:24 to go. The Dolphins pushed the lead back to two at 9-7, but Furman again responded, using back-to-back goals by Kreuzer and Carson Sorrells to tie the game at nine with 7:00 to go. Jacksonville netted two scores to regain the lead at 11-9 and Furman could not overcome the deficit, despite a goal by Gus Pinsoneault cutting the lead to 11-10 with 2:24 remaining.

Furman is back in action on Saturday, April 27, playing host to VMI in a 12:00 p.m. season finale, senior day contest.
