Spartanburg, S.C. – Five different players found the back of the net to power Furman to a 7-0 victory over USC Upstate in exhibition women's soccer action on Saturday evening in Spartanburg, S.C.
"We are continuing to develop our team chemistry and learn how to play for one another, but it was good to get a positive result tonight in our final preseason game," said Paladin head coach
Andrew Burr. "We'll go back to work this week and look forward to next weekend's regular season opener."
The Paladins totaled five goals in the opening 37:05. Sophomore
Erin Houlihan, a 2018 Southern Conference All-Freshman pick, opened the scoring at the 8:34 mark on an assist from freshman
Jasmine Greene before Greene doubled the lead on an assist from sophomore
Grace Baghdady at 17:18. Furman added three more goals in a stretch of 5:57 from the 31:08 mark to 37:05 as sophomore
Isabella Gutierrez, Greene and senior
Caitlyn Reilly netted goals.
In the second half, freshman
Julia Nicholas and
Kyndal Anderson capped the scoring for the Paladins. Greene finished with two goals and an assist, while Baghdady tallied two assists.
Furman managed a 26-1 edge in total shot and compiled a 17-0 advantage in shots on goal. Senior goalkeepers
Kellsey Weaver and
Sarah Rinker combined to record the shutout without making a save as the Paladins' defense did not surrender a shot in the second half.
The Paladins open the 2019 regular season on Friday night when they face UNC Wilmington in the opening round of the CofC Under Armor Invitational at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
