Fenton's Late Goal Sends Furman Past Davidson, 3-2

Paladins Win Their Fourth Straight Match

Greenville, S.C. – Sophomore Miles Fenton scored in the 87th minute to lift Furman to its fourth straight victory with a 3-2 decision versus Davidson in men's soccer action Saturday night on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium.

The win improved the Paladins to 4-1-1 on the season, while the Wildcats dropped to 1-3-0 with their third straight defeat.

With the match tied 2-2 and under 14 minutes left in regulation, Davidson went a man down when Jack Wilson was shown his second yellow card of the match. Furman created several dangerous chances in the following minutes before Fenton, a Wilmslow, England, product netted the go-ahead score at the 86:36 mark. Rocky Guerra, who finished with three assists on the night, danced on the ball near the top left corner of the box to create space. He lined a low cross towards the top of the six-yard box where Fenton finished his first goal of the campaign with one touch to put the Paladins in front, 3-2.

Furman managed a 15-5 advantage in total shots on the night and posted a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. Ben Hale, playing in his first game of the season, notched two saves to earn the victory in net for the Paladins.

Senior Emery May opened the scoring at 7:20 by taking a cross from Guerra at the near left post and punching a shot past Wildcat goalkeeper Sawyer Gaffney. Davidson equalized in the 26th minute when Justin Stone rose above the Paladin defense to head in Jamie Diluzio's corner kick.

Furman scored on a set piece of its own to regain the lead at the 55:34 mark. Guerra curled a corner kick to the far edge of the six-yard box for fellow senior Jack Shiels to nod home for his first goal of the season. Diluzio and Stone answered again for the Wildcats in the 74th minute on a turnover by Furman in its own half. Stone received a quick pass from Diluzio on the counter-attack and lined his shot past Hale for his second goal of the night to even the score at 2-2.

Gaffney took the loss in goal for Davidson while recording six saves.

Furman travels to Columbia, S.C., to face the South Carolina Gamecocks on Wednesday, September 18, before hosting USC Upstate for Hall of Fame Night on Saturday, September 21, at 7 p.m.
