Columbia, S.C. – Tucker Monheimer netted a pair of goals and Luca Mayr converted from the penalty spot to lead South Carolina past Furman, 3-0, in men's soccer action Wednesday evening at Stone Stadium in Columbia, S.C.
The loss snapped the Paladins' four-match winning streak and dropped Furman to 4-1-2 on the season. The Gamecocks improved to 4-2-0.
In the 31
st minute, Luca Mayr slipped a pass behind Furman's back line to Monheimer who made a diagonal run from the wing. He fired a shot across the face of goal to the left corner to stake the Gamecocks to a 1-0 lead. After Furman had a pair of chances to equalize in the final minutes of the first half, the Gamecocks stretched the lead to 2-0 at 43:24 when the Paladins were whistled for a foul in the box and Mayr converted his spot kick.
With less than 14 minutes left in regulation, the Gamecocks added an insurance goal as Andrew Hollaran and Brian Banahan set up Monheimer's second score of the night to extend the margin to 3-0.
South Carolina managed a 15-14 edge in total shots and 9-6 advantage in shots on goal. Buenyamin Yusufoglu turned away five shots to earn the shutout for the Gamecocks, while Furman's
Ben Hale finished with six saves.
