Four Different Paladins Score To Power Furman To 4-1 Victory Over USC Upstate

Paladins Host Clemson On Tuesday At 7 p.m.

Greenville, S.C. – Conor Sloan, Cole McLagan, Shaun-Chris Joash and Alfredo Diaz-Santillan each netted a goal to power Furman past USC Upstate, 4-1, in non-conference men's soccer action on Hall of Fame Night Saturday evening at Stone Stadium.

With the victory, the Paladins improved to 5-2-1 on the season and 3-0-0 at home. The Spartans slipped to 1-4-0.

"It was a hard-fought win tonight and we were able to score some nice goals," said Paladin head coach Doug Allison. "We are very appreciative of the fan support tonight and hope to see everyone back here on Tuesday."

Furman opened the scoring in the 32nd minute on Sloan's third goal of the season. Joash won the ball in traffic inside the box and played a pass into the path of Sloan, who lined a shot into the right-side netting.

McLagan doubled the lead at 46:36 with his team-leading sixth goal of the year. Furman earned a free kick less than five yards outside the top of the box and McLagan curled his free kick around the wall and into the lower right-hand corner to give the Paladins a 2-0 advantage.

In the 61st minute, Furman created a turnover in the midfield and Emery May played Joash behind the Spartan defense. The freshman drew the goalkeeper off his line before chipping a shot over the shoulder of the charging keeper for his third goal of the year.

After USC Upstate's Joel Bunting headed in a corner kick at 68:10 to put the Spartans on the board, Diaz-Santillan capped the scoring with his first career goal. Sloan sprung the freshman free on a breakaway and he sent a shot through the legs of the charging goalkeeper to fashion the final 4-1 margin at 88:55.

Furman outshot the Spartans 12-8 and posted a 7-3 edge in shots on goal. Ben Hale stopped two shots to earn the win in goal for the Paladins, while Felipe Baeza turned away three shots for the Spartans.

The Paladins are back at home on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. when they host nationally-ranked Clemson on Seagraves Field at Stone Stadium. Tickets for Tuesday's match are $5 and can be purchased at FurmanPaladins.com or at the Stone Stadium entrance beginning one hour prior to kickoff.
