Athens, Ga. – Georgia's Ashley Andersen tallied a pair of goals late in the first half to propel the Bulldogs past Furman, 2-0, in the Paladins' non-conference finale Sunday afternoon at the Turner Soccer Complex in Athens, Ga.
The loss dropped the Paladins to 5-4-0 on the season, while Georgia improved to 4-4-1.
"It's always a tough test to go on the road against an SEC opponent," said Paladin head coach
Andrew Burr. "We played hard and competed, but they took advantage of their chances in the first half and that proved to be the difference. Our team will look to continue improving and prepare for SoCon play this coming weekend."
After Furman controlled much of the early possession and created three corner kicks and a couple of scoring opportunities in the opening minutes, Georgia broke through first at the 30:38 mark. Chloe Chapman slid a pass to Andersen on the left side of the box and her mishit shot wrong-footed Paladin goalkeeper
Kellsey Weaver as it trickled into the left corner.
Just over three minutes later, Daria Stan made a run down the right wing and sent a cross towards the top of the six-yard box. Andersen rose above two defenders to head in her second goal of the afternoon at 33:39 to increase the margin to 2-0.
Georgia compiled a 10-6 edge in total shots, but just a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal. Furman held the SEC's Bulldogs without a shot on target in the second half.
Emory Wegener stopped two shots to pick up the shutout for the Bulldogs. Weaver recorded one save for Furman.
The Paladins open SoCon play next weekend when they visit Samford on Friday at 8 p.m. ET before taking on the Chattanooga Mocs in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Sunday, September 29.
