Statesboro, Ga. – A five-run second inning and two-run fourth helped Evansville rally from a three-run deficit to down Furman softball, 7-6, Saturday morning at the Eagle Round Robin in Statesboro, Ga.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the second, the Purple Aces benefitted from two walks and a hit by pitch to load the bases with nobody out. A single and sacrifice fly trimmed the lead to 3-2 before leadoff hitter Jessica Fehr belted a three-run homer to put Evansville in front 5-3 after two innings.
Furman (1-10) evened the game in the top of the third.
Amanda Fleming worked a leadoff walk and
Morgan Smith hammered a two-run shot over the right-center field fence to knot the game at 5-5. A leadoff walk by Mea Adams and a Hannah Hood single put the Purple Aces back in front in the bottom of the fourth and a bases loaded walk forced hood in to double the lead.
The Paladins'
Natalie Morgan connected on a solo homer in the top of the seventh inning, but Evansville (6-5) retired the next two batters to escape with the victory.
Fehr went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Evansville, while Hood collected two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Reliever Emily Lockhart (4-1) picked up the victory allowing just a run on two hits over four innings. She fanned six Paladins without issuing a walk.
Smith suffered the loss for Furman to fall to 1-6. She gave up two runs on three hits in four innings, while walking three and striking out three.
Casey Bigham and Smith each drove in two runs in the loss.
Furman concludes tournament play on Sunday at 2 p.m. against host Georgia Southern. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
