Salt Lake City, Utah – The Furman men's lacrosse team resumed its three-game road trip on Saturday afternoon falling 17-9 in non-conference play to the Utah Utes at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
Furman drops to 1-3 on the season while Utah improves to 1-2 overall.
"I thought we played very well in the first half," said head coach
Richie Meade. "We had some opportunities to cash in on and we didn't. That haunted us late in the game. We played well when we had the ball but they did a great job of gaining possession and maintaining the ball. I thought our kids played hard and it was a hard-fought game."
Anders Erickson,
Brett Tenaglia and
Chad Kreuzer each led the Paladins offensively with three points on two goals and one assist.
Austin Leonard,
Luke Majick and
Jack Dowd all recorded one goal.
Carson Sorrells,
Brandon Bank and
Tucker Brown each dished out one assist.
Kris Casey picked up four ground balls and
Will O'Grady caused three turnovers.
Alec Van de Bovenkamp set a new school record with 22 saves in the contest, surpassing his old mark of 21 set last season against Mercer.
Colin Burke posted a game-high eight points for the Utes on four goals and four assists. Jimmy Perkins, Mac Costin and MJ McMahon all recorded hat tricks. Jack Zarnik and
Jack Barron both tallied two assists. In goal, Liam Donnelly earned the win while Zion DeChesere grabbed six saves.
Furman outscored Utah 3-2 in both the first and second quarters on Saturday.
The teams exchanged the first three goals of the game with Kreuzer tying the score at 1-1 with 11:18 remaining off the assist from Erickson. After the Utes took the lead back less than a minute later, the Paladins concluded the first quarter with Leonard and Kreuzer scoring back-to-back goals. The goal by Kreuzer with 4:55 left gave Furman a 3-2 lead.
Dowd capped the Paladins' 3-0 run to start the second quarter when his goal at the 14:27 mark extended their lead out to 4-2. Utah cut its deficit down to 4-3 with 13:36 to go but Furman responded with goals from Erickson and Majick to go ahead 6-3. Majick gave the Paladins a three-goal lead with 7:53 remaining. The Utes scored with 3:25 left in the half as Furman led 6-4 at intermission.
Utah scored seven of the nine goals during the third quarter including five of the final six. The Utes began the second half scoring two consecutive goals before Erickson put the Paladins back in front 7-6 with his goal at the 11:44 mark. Utah outscored Furman 5-1 over the final 10:34 and held an 11-8 advantage heading to the fourth quarter. Tenaglia picked up a goal with 5:39 left in the period.
The Utes continued their run into the fourth quarter, scoring six straight goals to take a 17-8 lead. Utah's final goal of the game with 55 seconds to go put the score at 17-8. Tenaglia collected his second goal less than 20 seconds later and made the final score 17-9.
Furman finished the game with 34 shots and 28 ground balls while holding a 22-10 advantage in saves. The Paladins also forced the Utes into 13 turnovers.
Furman wraps up its road trip on Sunday, March 1 traveling to Duke for a 12 p.m. matchup.
