Greenville, S.C. – Pitt rallied to score four runs in the top of the sixth inning and held off a furious seventh inning rally by Furman as the Panthers down the Paladins, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon at Pepsi Stadium.
With the win, Pitt improved to 8-11 on the season, while the Paladins slipped to 7-18.
Trailing 1-0, Pitt plated four runs in the top of the sixth inning on four hits, a walk and four stolen bases. Connor McGaffic drove in the tying run with an RBI single before Alexee Haynes' fielder's choice scored pinch runner Hannah Bach with the go-ahead run. Walker Barbee laced a two-run single to center field off starter
Morgan Smith to up the margin to 4-1.
Furman answered with a run in the sixth inning as
Casey Bigham reached on a leadoff single and scored on
Riley Ludlam's two-out base hit to left field. With two outs and nobody on base in the seventh,
Natalie Morgan lined a single to right field and Bigham worked a base on balls. Reliever Brittany Knight came on to replace Pitt starter Abby Edwards, but she plunked the next two batters to load the bases and force in a run, trimming the lead to 4-3. Knight recovered to get Smith looking and strand the bases loaded.
Edwards (2-0) allowed three runs on five hits over six and two-thirds innings of work to get the win. She walked two batters and fanned six. Knight picked up her first save by retiring the final batter.
Smith (3-11) took the loss for Furman after allowing four runs on seven hits in five and one-third innings in the circle. The senior walked one batter and struck out two.
McGaffic went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Barbee finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs to lead Pitt. Ludlam collected two hits and delivered a sacrifice fly in three at bats for the Paladins.
The Paladins will travel to Athens, Ga., for a Wednesday doubleheader versus Georgia. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. and the twinbill will be streamed live on the SEC Network+.
