David Webel went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs and freshman pitchers
Matthew Marchal and
Gavin Scott combined to hurl 6 1/3 effective innings to lead Furman past UNC Asheville, 8-5, in Wednesday evening baseball action at Latham Stadium.
The win halted a four-game losing skid for Furman (6-7) while UNC Asheville (2-10) dropped its sixth straight with the loss.
Webel, a redshirt junior outfielder, delivered a two-run single in the second inning, an RBI double in the fourth, and finished off his game with an RBI single in a three-run fifth that put Paladins ahead for good.
Jordan Starkes also had three hits, and
Aidan Healy tallied a pair of hits and scored two runs. Â
Logan Taplett drew a pair of walks and scored three runs for the Paladins, who finished with 12 hits.
Marchal (2-1), who earned the victory, took over for starter
Hank Nichols with two outs in the third inning and proceeded to work 4 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and a pair of runs, only one of which was earned. Â The St. Joseph's Catholic School product, walked two and struck out two.
Scott pitched the eighth and ninth innings to notch his first collegiate save. Â The Jupiter, Fla., product struck out four before surrendering a pair of singles in the ninth. Â He recovered to get the Bulldogs' Wade Chandler on a fly ball to end the game.
The loss was charged to Tyler Serrichhio (0-1), who was the victim of a throwing error by shortstop Sebastian Dunn in the fifth that led to three unearned runs, breaking at 5-5 tie.
Furman opens a three-game home series against Campbell on Friday, with first pitch at Latham Stadium set for 4:00 p.m.
