GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Cam Cowan hurled six innings of solid baseball and Campbell pounded out 12 hits, including three home runs, to roll past Furman, 13-3, in the opening game of a three-game series Friday afternoon at windy Latham Stadium.
The two teams play game two of the series on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
Cowan (2-2), a junior right-hander, had little trouble in earning the victory, limiting the Paladins to just five hits and one run over his six frames. Â He didn't walk a batter and struck out eight.
The Camels took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Collin Wolf cranked a solo home left field off Paladin starting pitcher
Stone Simmons (0-3), and added two more in the third, taking advantage of Furman's inability to convert a double play, to get to Spencer Packard, who deposited a two-out offering from Simmons over the right center field fence for a 3-0 lead.
Campbell led 4-0 in the fourth when Furman's
Sterling Turmon doubled to right field to score
Jake Crawford, but the Paladins failed to advance runners at second and third with no outs, as Cowan retired
Logan Taplett on a ground ball to third base, struck out
Aidan Healy, and got
Banks Griffith on a short fly ball to right field to end the inning.
The Camels scored runs in every inning but the second, including five in the seventh.
Coby Collins' 3-for-4 performance paced Campbell at the plate. Â Cruz Aranda went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored and Zach Williams drove in three runs.
Dax Roper had two of of Furman's six hits, including a two-run double in the ninth.
