GREENVILLE, S.C. --
Banks Griffith went 3-for-5 with a pair of two-run doubles, and
John Michael Bertrand pitched six strong innings to lead Furman past Campbell, 14-6, in game two of a three-game weekend series Saturday at Latham Stadium.
The Paladins (7-8) and Camels (6-8) will decide the series on Sunday in a 1:00 p.m. contest.
Griffith, a sophomore second baseman, registered his first extra base hit of the contest in the second with a two-run double into the left field corner to give Furman a 2-0 lead. Â He singled and scored in the fourth on a
David Webel two-run home run, and the Gainesville, Ga., product finished off his stellar performance with a two-run double in a seven-run Paladin seventh inning that gave the Paladins a 13-1 lead.
Furman, which roughed up Campbell pitching for 13 hits, got a 3-for-3 performance from
Dax Roper, who staked the Paladins to a 2-0 advantage in the first with his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field, He added doubles in the third and sixth innings to finish the game with three RBI and two runs scored.
MJ Sasapan had two hits and scored three runs.
The solid run support made it easy for Bertrand who needed next to no help in mastering Campbell. Â The Paladin redshirt junior left-hander carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Cruz Aranda led off the frame with a double, but he was promptly erased by Bertrand with a pickoff. Â The Camels went on to score an unearned run in the sixth to cut Furman's lead to 6-1.
The Paladins responded in the bottom of the frame with their biggest outburst of the season, plating seven runs on five hits, including RBI doubles by Roper and Griffith, and an RBI triple off the center field fence by
Blake Brady.
Bertrand surrendered just two hits and an unearned run in collecting the victory. Â He walked two and struck out eight.Â
Roper's two-run shot in the first and Griffith's two-run double in the second helped chase Campbell starting and losing pitcher Kevin Westlake (2-1), who lasted just 2 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on four hits and walks.
