GREENVILLE, S.C. --
Rob Hughes pitched seven innings of one-hit ball and Furman combined balanced offense with some stellar defensive work to beat Campbell, 8-2, in Sunday afternoon baseball action at Latham Stadium.
The win, the third in the last four games for Furman (8-8), earned the Paladins the series victory over Campbell (6-9).
Hughes (2-1), a sophomore right-hander, struck out six of the first nine batters he faced before hitting the Camels' Waldy Arias to lead off the fourth inning. Â The Camels went on to score twice in the frame without the benefit of a base hit and threatened again in the fifth after Hughes plunked Cruz Aranda to start the inning, but Paladin right-fielder
David Webel halted the threat by catching a fly ball off the bat of Arias near the right field line and throwing a one hop bullet to third baseman
Joey Tepper, who tagged out Aranda to complete the inning ending double play.
Hughes retired the Camels in the sixth and in order in the seventh to record the longest outing of his career.
The Rock Hill, S.C., product was supported by a Paladin offense that registered 11 hits, including a
Banks Griffith two-run single in the second that staked Furman to a 2-0 lead.
The Paladins doubled their advantage an inning later when designated hitter
Blake Brady, a product of Greenville's J.L. Mann High School, cranked a one-ball, one-strike offering from Campbell starting and losing pitcher Logan Heintzman (0-1) over the left field fence for a two-run home run.
Up 4-2, the Paladins pushed across two more runs for a 6-2 lead in the fifth on a
Logan Taplett two-run single off Camel reliever Jack Yusko into short center field.
The Paladins got another stellar defensive play in the eighth, when sophomore center fielder
Jordan Starkes jumped high above and beyond the eight-foot fence in deep left center field to glove what appeared destined to be a home run ball off the bat of the Camels' Collin Wolf. Â Campbell went on to load the bases against Paladin reliever Mat Lazzaro, who choked off the threat by striking out Koby Collins looking to end the inning.
Furman tacked on two more runs in the eighth on an
MJ Sasapan two-run single tha beat Campbell's infield shift.
