Birmingham, Ala. – Furman plated three runs in the top of the seventh and
Bailey Tanner tossed a complete game to guide the Paladins to a 3-2 victory over Jacksonville on Friday afternoon in the UAB Tournament at Mary Bowers Stadium in Birmingham, Ala.
Tanner (4-6) fanned four batters on the day and worked through trouble in the bottom of the seventh to help the Paladins win for the fifth time in their last seven contests. With Furman leading 3-0 in the last half of the seventh, a pair of walks and a two-out error got the Dolphins on the board. Carolyn O'Neal followed with an RBI single to trim the lead to 3-2, but the Paladins threw out the runner at third base on an attempted double steal to end the game.
Furman broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Morgan Smith started the inning with a walk and
Riley Ludlam followed with a double.
Emily Bartlett worked a one-out walk to load the bases before Savnnah Hughes popped out to shortstop. With two outs,
Mariah Bohl laced a two-run single to right field that was misplayed allowing a Carolina Nageotte to score from first base.
Skylar Whitty (7-5) took the loss for Jacksonville (13-9) after surrendering three runs on three hits in seven innings. She walked four and struck out four. Tanner allowed just three hits and two unearned runs over seven innings to secure the win for Furman.
The Paladins (6-14) face the host Blazers at 6:30 p.m. ET to conclude Friday's play. On Saturday, Furman battles Jacksonville at 11 a.m. ET and matches up against the Colgate Raiders at 6:30 p.m. ET. Tournament play concludes on Sunday afternoon with a 12:30 p.m. first pitch versus UAB.
