DURHAM, N.C. -- Tenth-ranked Duke subdued Furman, 5-2, Sunday at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in Durham, N.C.
The Blue Devils picked up wins at flights two and three doubles to take the opening point. Chloe Beck and Karolina Berankova defeated junior Madison Dillon and senior MaryAnn Rompf, 6-3, at flight two, and Kelly Chen and Georgia Drummy teamed up for a 6-0 victory over sophomore Maggie Pate and freshman Ellie Schoppe at number three. The flight one match was unfinished, with Furman senior Katarina Kozarov and junior Julia Adams, who rank 27th nationally, leading Meible Chi and Margaryta Bilokin, 5-3.
The Paladins scored two singles victories. Kozarov, who ranks 15th nationally, held off eight-ranked Chen, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0(10-4) at flight one, and Schoppe defeated Berankova, who ranks 95th nationally, 6-4, 6-3, at flight six.Â
Duke, with all six players ranked nationally, won the final four singles matches. Twenty-eighth ranked Drummy downed Adams, 6-1, 7-5, at flight two, and No. 111 Che scored a 6-3, 6-3 advantage over Dillon at number three. At flight four, No. 44 Bilokin topped Rompf, 6-1, 6-2, and at number five, Beck, who ranks 29th nationally, beat Pate, 6-1, 6-2. Furman (1-4) will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to face Alabama on February 6 then return to the Mickel Tennis Center to entertain Wake Forest on Feb. 7. First serve for both matches is set for noon. Â
