MACON, GA. - Rayanne de Oliveira recorded nine kills as Mercer topped Furman, 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-5), Saturday night at Hawkins Arena in Macon, Ga.
The Paladins fall to 6-12 overall and 1-7 in SoCon action, while the Bears improve to 11-8 overall and 7-1 in SoCon play.
For Furman, senior Neci Harris recorded five kills, while junior Sarah Turner added 11 assists. Junior Andrea Aceveda logged 10 digs.
Agnieska Paskevic led Mercer with 23 assists, while Megan Smith added 11 digs.
The teams were tied at 7-all in set one before Mercer scored three-straight points to gain the momentum. The Paladins capitalized off two Bears errors to come within one, 11-10, and stayed within one at 13-12 off a kill by sophomore Sydney Tanner, but Mercer would outscore Furman, 12-4, to end the set with a 25-16 victory.
In set two, the Paladins stayed within two at 8-6 before the Bears put together a 10-3 run to lead, 18-9. Furman reeled off four-consecutive points off kills from junior Natalie Dunn and Tanner, coupled with two Mercer errors. The Paladins remained within five at 20-15, but Mercer scored the final five points for the 25-15 victory. Mercer won set three, 25-5, for the win.
The Paladins will entertain Wofford Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Alley Gymnasium.
