Furman Suffers 3-2 Loss to #18 Duke

Raine Ties Career-High of Two Goals, Roberts Grabs Career-Best 10 Saves

Greenville, S.C. – The Furman men's soccer team suffered a 3-2 setback to the 18th-ranked Duke Blue Devils in non-conference play Tuesday evening at Stone Stadium.

Furman drops to 3-8-1 on the season while Duke improves to 10-3 overall.

Jake Raine led the Paladins offensively tying his career-high with two goals to give him a team-leading eight for the season. Ivan Agyaakwah recorded his first assist of the year. Goalkeeper Ben Roberts set a new career-high with 10 saves.

Peter Stroud, Shakur Mohammed and Miguel Ramirez all scored once to lead the Blue Devils. Felix Barajas and Jai Bean dished out one assist apiece. Goalkeeper Eliot Hamill finished with four saves.

Stroud put Duke on the board first in the 34th minute on a penalty kick. The Blue Devils were awarded the attempt when Bean was fouled by a Furman defender inside the penalty area.

Raine's first goal of the contest in the 71st minute equalized for the Paladins and put the score at 1-1. Agyaakwah intercepted a Duke pass off a failed clear attempt near the far sideline and passed to Raine at the top of the 18-yard box. Raine beat one Blue Devil defender and his attempt while falling from 11 yards out deflected off Hamill into the net left side.

Duke responded quickly just over a minute later when Ramirez's goal, with Bean and Barajas getting the assist, gave it the lead back at 2-1. Barajas left a through ball to Bean near the Blue Devil bench and Bean followed with a cross back to the middle of the 18-yard box. The pass found an open Ramirez who scored on the one-timer inside the right post.

Duke extended its lead to 3-1 in the 87th minute when Mohammed scored unassisted. Mohammed gained possession of the ball outside the 18-yard box far side and dribbled by one Furman defender near the touchline. He would then beat another Paladin defender and scored past Roberts right side from six yards.

Furman answered back 28 seconds later when Raine's penalty kick goal cut its deficit down to 3-2. Sam Miller laid a cross near side back into the 18-yard box at a crowd of players. Alfredo Diaz-Santillan missed on the one-time attempt, but the ball bounced off the ground and hit the hand of a Blue Devil defender giving the Paladins the penalty try.

Duke held a 22-8 advantage in shots and 14-6 in attempts on goal. The Blue Devils also led 13-4 in corner kicks.

Raine attempted a team-high four shots for Furman including three on goal. Thorleifur Ulfarsson had six shots for Duke and three attempts on net.

The Paladins play their final home game of the regular season Saturday evening when they host East Tennessee State at 7 p.m. for Senior Night.
