WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team had all five players advance from the qualifying singles draw Thursday in the opening day of the ITA Carolinas Regional Championships at the Wake Forest Tennis Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. The tournament, which runs through Monday, showcases the top women's tennis players from the states of North Carolina and South Carolina.
Sophomore Ellie Schoppe defeated Davidson's Mira Gladston, 6-1, 6-2, then beat Sophia Hatton of Clemson, 6-4, 7-6(5), in the round of 32. Freshman Ellie Schulson recorded a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Lindsay Tulenko of South Carolina then defeated Davidson's Daniela Porges, 6-4, 6-0 in the second round. In the round of 64, freshman Jess Dawson scored a 6-0, 6-2 win versus Charleston Southern's Laura Marti and topped Zoe Huffman of UNCW, 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 32.
Junior Maggie Pate beat Appalachian State's Helena Jansen, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2, then defeated Alisa Diercksen of East Carolina, 6-4, 6-4, in the round of 32. Senior Madison Dillon registered a victory in the round of 64 when UNCW's Sasha Belaya retired with Dillon ahead, 6-0, 2-1, then came from behind to beat Maja Jekauc of College of Charleston, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-2.
These five Paladins will join senior Julia Adams and freshman Sara Snyder in the main draw beginning on Friday.
In doubles action, Adams and Dillon, which are ranked second in the regional, defeated Alison O'Dea and Victoria Saldh of Elon, 8-1, to advance to the round of 16 in main draw A1.
The regional continues on Friday, with doubles action beginning at 9 a.m.
