Asheville, N.C. – Miles Fenton's first goal of the 2021 season proved to be the game-winner for the Furman men's soccer team on Wednesday as it rallied for a 2-1 victory over the UNC Asheville Bulldogs in its non-conference finale from Greenwood Soccer Field.
Furman improves to 5-8-1 on the season while UNC Asheville drops to 1-12-1 overall.
Jake Raine led the Paladins with a goal and an assist, while Fenton added a goal.
Alfredo Diaz-Santillan also contributed an assist. In goal,
Ben Roberts and
Kellen Reinsborough combined for four saves. Making his first appearance of the season in goal, Reinsborough collected the win.
Silas Goss scored the lone goal for the Bulldogs and Wes Ferry dished out one assist. Goalkeeper Leon Musial finished with two saves.
Furman fell behind just as play entered the 70
th minute when Goss scored off Ferry's assist. UNC Asheville was awarded a free kick 35 yards away and the ball found Ferry inside the 18-yard box. Ferry headed the ball back to the top of the 18 where Goss scored on the one-timer inside the right post.
The Paladins responded by scoring twice over a stretch of 12 minutes to take a 2-1 lead. Raine netted his team-leading 10
th goal of the season in the 72
nd minute and Fenton followed in the 84
th minute.
Furman had possession of the ball on its side of the field when Fenton made a pass to
Giovanni Lagnerini on the far side of the 18-yard box. Lagnerini made a dribble near the touchline and passed back to Fenton. Fenton's initial attempt was blocked by the Bulldogs but Raine collected the rebound and scored over Musial.
Diaz-Santillan received a pass at midfield before laying a cross to Raine between two UNC Asheville defenders. Raine beat one defender and quickly passed back to Fenton. Fenton would then beat another UNCA defender, took one dribble, and fired an attempt from 25 yards out. The attempt rolled past Musial into the right side of the net.
UNC Asheville held a 13-8 advantage in shots and 5-4 in attempts on goal. The Bulldogs also led 7-2 in corner kicks.
Raine attempted a team-high three shots for the Paladins with two going on goal. Jake Kemhadjian and Conor Behan recorded three shots apiece for the Bulldogs and were part of five players who had one attempt on net.
Furman plays its final game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon, traveling to VMI for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff against the Keydets.
