Lexington, Va. – The Furman men's soccer team won its third game in a row to close out the regular season following a 3-0 victory over the VMI Keydets in Southern Conference action, Saturday afternoon at Patchin Field.
Furman improves to 6-8-1 on the season and 4-2 in conference play, while VMI falls to 1-15-1 overall and 0-6 in the SoCon.
Conor Dowler,
Jake Raine and
Sam Miller all scored one goal for the Paladins. Raine dished out one assist along with
Josh Hosie and
Alfredo Diaz-Santillan. In goal,
Ben Roberts recorded his second career shutout, and first this season, after finishing with four saves.
Furman scored twice in the opening 17 minutes of the contest to take an early 2-0 lead. The Paladins netted their goals within one minute of each other with Dowler recording his first goal of the season in the 16
th minute and Raine his team-leading 11
th in the 17
th minute. Raine dished out the assist on Dowler's goal and Hosie contributed to the goal scored by Raine.
Furman held a 2-0 lead at halftime and, defensively, limited the Keydets to just four shot attempts.
Miller registered his first goal of the season in the 61
st minute to secure the Paladins 3-0 victory, scoring off the assist from Diaz-Santillan.
Furman held a 12-8 advantage over VMI in shots and 6-4 in attempts on goal. The Paladins also led 6-4 in corner kicks.
Dowler, Miller,
Tommy Kay and
Miles Fenton all attempted a team-high two shots, while Dowler and Miller both had two attempts on goal.
Nathan Lam led the Keydets with four shots and was one of four players to have one attempt on net. Goalkeeper Broden Schull grabbed three saves.
The 2021 SoCon Men's Soccer Championship kicks off next week starting on Monday, November 1 with the first round. The quarterfinals are slated for November 5 and semifinals November 7. The championship game will be held either on November 13 or 14.
