Furman Takes Down ETSU, 3-1, for First SoCon Victory

Greene, Gaither, Gutierrez Each Scored Once for the Paladins

Greenville, S.C. – Jasmine Greene and Nieva Gaither both had a goal and assist on Sunday afternoon to lead the Furman Paladins to a 3-1 victory over the East Tennessee State Buccaneers in Southern Conference women's soccer action at Stone Stadium.

Furman improves its record to 5-4-1 on the season and 1-2 in conference play, while ETSU drops to 4-3-3 overall and 1-1-2 in the SoCon.

It didn't take long for the Paladins to get on the board first with Greene collecting her third goal of the season in the 10th minute. Gaither got the play started after receiving a pass at midfield from Isabella Gutierrez and quickly found Greene on the Buccaneers' side of the field with a through ball. Greene gained possession just outside the 18-yard box and scored from 15 yards out inside the right post.

In the 26th minute, Furman extended its lead to 2-0 when Greene contributed to Gaither's second goal of the year. Greene's initial attempt was saved by ETSU goalkeeper Shu Ohba but Greene collected the rebound outside the six-yard box. She quickly passed to Gaither in the middle of the 18-yard box and Gaither scored on the one-timer left side.

The Paladins scored less than five minutes into the second half, making the score 3-0, when Gutierrez netted her third goal of the season and second off a penalty kick. Furman was granted the penalty attempt when Ashlyn Goila was fouled inside the top-left corner of the 18-yard box.

Momoko Horiuchi cut the Paladins' lead down to 3-1 in the 68th minute after scoring East Tennessee State's only goal of the contest. A pass from midfield deflected off a Furman player and Horiuchi collected the rebound outside the 18-yard box. Horiuchi dribbled through two Paladins and scored inside the right post from 21 yards away.

Greene led Furman with four shots and three attempts on goal while registering her second assist of the season. Gaither contributed her team-leading fifth assist. Addison Corn recorded her fifth win in goal after grabbing three saves.

Horiuchi was one of six ETSU players to post one shot while four had one attempt on goal apiece. Ohba finished with five saves.

The Paladins held a 13-6 advantage in shots and 8-4 in attempts on goal. Furman also led 2-1 in corner kicks.

The Paladins are on the road next weekend for the first time in conference play. Furman travels to Chattanooga on October 8 for a 7 p.m. matchup and then plays at Samford on October 10 at 2 p.m.
