ATHENS, GA. -- Sarah Ashlee Barker scored 19 points and Georgia combined strong defense with accurate shooting to beat Furman, 78-41, in women's basketball action Monday evening at Stegeman Coliseum.
The win improves Georgia to 2-0 on the season while the loss squares Furman's record at 1-1 heading into Wednesday's home game versus Converse.
Barker's 19-point effort was followed by Jenna Staiti's 14, and Que Morrison's 11 points.
Georgia led Furman 21-16 after one period before taking control in the second quarter, outscoring the smaller Paladins, 16-7, to secure a 37-23 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs connected on 32-of-69 shots (47.4 percent) and used sticky half-court defense to limit the Paladins to just 24.6 percent shooting (14x57).
Barker connected on 8-of-13 shots from the field, while Staiti canned 6-of-8 field goal attempts, which she combined with six rebounds and five blocks.
Georgia used its size to register 10 blocks in the contest and outscore Furman 52-16 in the paint.
Furman was led by senior forward
Tierra Hodges with 13 points. Â
Tate Walters chipped in eight points and a team leading six rebounds.
The Bulldogs forged a 46-38 rebounding advantage and forced Furman into 20 turnovers while committing only nine.
