BERKELEY, CALIF. -- Jayda Curry scored 26 points and California survived a fourth quarter comeback by Furman to hold off the Paladins, 82-73, in the opening round of the Cal Raising The B.A.R. Invitational Friday afternoon at Haas Pavilion.
The win moves Cal (5-0) into Saturday's tournament 3:00 p.m. PT championship game against the winner of today's other first round matchup between San Diego State and Ole Miss. Â Furman (4-2), which got a career high 25 points from
Tierra Hodges, will play in the 1:00 p.m. PT consolation game.
Hodges, a 5-foot-9 senior forward, connected on 8-of-17 shots, including 4-of-7 3-pointers and 5-of-6 free throws for her 25 points, which topped her previous career high of 23 set against Georgia State and Chattanooga last season.
Sydney James followed 16 points, and Tater Walters had 15.
The Paladins trailed the Golden Bears 30-24 with under two minutes to go in the first half when Cal's Leilani McIntosh was whistled for a common foul on Hodges, who was knocked off balance by the contact. Â In her attempt to regain balance,Hodges collided with McIntosh, which earned an extended review by officials. Â The call, a technical foul on Hodges, resulted in two free throws by the Bears' Cailyn Crocker and a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession Mia Mastrov, spurring an 8-0 run that Crocker finished with a 3-pointer with five seconds remaining to send the Bears to the locker room with a 38-24 advantage.
Cal extended their lead to 62-37 on a three-point play by Evelien Lutje Schipholt with 2:47 remaining in the third quarter.
Furman finished the third period with a 7-0 run following a
Greyson Boone 3-pointer,
Tate Walters jumper, and Hodges basket off a fast break.
A free throw by Lutje Schipholt to open fourth quarter scoring halted Furman's run, but the Paladins continued to battle back on the strength of consecutive 3-pointers by freshman
Niveya Henley and two treys by Hodges on its next three possessions to slice Cal's lead to 63-53 with 8:27 remaining. Â
Two Henley free throws pulled Furman to within 72-64 at the 3:42 mark, and a
Tate Walters 3-pointer made it a 76-69 game with just under three minutes to go. Â
On the Paladins' next possession James bottomed out a 3-pointer off an assist by Walters to get Furman to within four points at 76-72, but following a timeout Curry broke Furman's press for a layup and added a pair of free throws with just under a minute to go to push the Bears' advantage to 80-72.
Walters registered 12 of her 15 points in the second half, and James contributed 11 of her 16 over the final 20 minutes.
Lutje Schipholt followed Curry with 18 points, and Crocker finished with 17. Â Cal shot 49.1 percent from the field, making 27-of-55 shots. Â The Bears registered a 32-10 points differential in the paint and forged a 41-30 rebounding advantage.
Furman converted 21-of-59 shots (35.6 percent) but made 12-of-26 from beyond the arc.
