BERKELEY, CALIF. --
Tate Walters poured in a game high 24 points, and Furman used a strong second quarter to overcome an early double-digit deficit on the way to a 71-62 victory over San Diego State in the consolation game of Cal's Raising The B.A.R. Invitational Saturday afternoon at Haas Pavilion.
The win improves Furman to a 5-2 on the season, while San Diego State falls to 4-3.
Walters, a sophomore guard, found the mark on 7-of-14 shots, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range, and drained 4-of-6 free throws for her 24 points, one shy of her career high. Â The Buford, Ga., product also tacked on seven rebounds and four assists in 35 minutes of action.
She accounted for 16 of her 24 points in the second half to help the Paladins maintain their advantage.
Sydney James tallied 14 points, and freshman forward
Kate Johnson rounded out Furman's double figure scoring threesome with 10 points, contributing seven in a pivotal second quarter. Â
Tierra Hodges finished with nine points but claimed a game high 14 rebounds, pulling down 10 in the second half in helping the Paladins register a 43-37 advantage on the glass.
Mercedes Staples paced San Diego State with 20 points.
The Aztecs raced out to a 17-5 lead over the game's first five minutes before Furman answered with a 9-1 run over the final five minutes of the period to pull to within 18-14 following a
Greyson Boone 3-pointer in the final seconds of the frame.
The Paladins continued their run in the second period, taking their first lead of the contest, 19-18, on a
Janay Outten layup.
A Walters 3-ball at the 2:25 mark capped an 8-0 spurt and put Furman up 29-21, and James finished off the Paladins' 22-point period by bottoming out a 3-pointer with five seconds to go to send the Paladins to the locker room up, 36-25.
Furman, which maintained a double digit lead for much of the third quarter, went up 49-34 on a Hodges layup with 15 seconds to go in the quarter, and the Paladins expanded their advantage to 65-48 on Walters' sixth trey of the contest, with 5:57 showing on the clock.
The Aztecs fashioned an 11-0 run to get within 65-59 following two free throws by Asia Avinger with just over two minutes to go, but the Paladins halted the surge when Outten dropped a pass into the block for
Grace van Rij, who converted a layup to beat the shot clock with 1:44 to go.
Walters' strong work from 3-point range highlighted Furman's 11-for-23 shooting from beyond the arc and effectively nullified San Diego State's 12-for-24 shooting from 3-point land.
The Paladins shot 39 percent (23x59) from the field and converted 14-of-19 free throws.Â
