HAMPTON, VA. -- Nylah Young scored 19 points and Hampton used hot first half shooting to race past Furman, 82-53, in women's basketball action Monday evening at Hampton's Convocation Center.
The win was the third straight for Hampton, which improves to 4-6 on the season. Â Furman falls to 6-7 heading into the Christmas break.
Hampton, which entered he game shooting just 22.0 percent from 3-point range, used the 14-day break since its last game to dial in its shooting, as the Pirates connected on 8-of-15 first half treys, part of a 17-for-29 overall shooting effort over the game's first 20 minutes, to take command. Hampton led 20-10 after one period and outscored Furman 26-8 in the second period to secure a 46-18 halftime advantage.
Young made 9-of-14 shots for her team leading 19 points, and Victoria Davis followed with 13 points on the strength of 3-of-4 shooting from beyond the arc
Six Pirates contributed 3-pointers in the contest as Hampton ended the game shooting 50.0 percent from the field (31x62).
Grace van Rij led Furman with 15 points, and
Tierra Hodges added 13 points and a game high 14 rebounds, notching her seventh double-double of the season.
Furman committed a season high 26 turnovers, which Hampton converted into 28 points.
The Paladins play at South Carolina State on Dec. 29.
