Stetson Downs Furman, 67-58

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Ayanna Dublin connected on all eight field goal attempts in an 18-point performance, and Stetson used strong defense to defeat Furman, 67-58, in women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at Timmons Arena.

Dublin, a 5-foot-10 graduate from Brooklyn, N.Y., combined eight assists and six rebounds with her 18 points in 31 minutes of play to pace Stetson (5-3), which rode solid shooting to the win in its first basketball meeting with Furman (5-4). The Hatters converted 27-of-54 field goal attempts (.500) while limiting the Paladins just 20-of-66 shooting from field (.303).

Yazz Wazeeerud-Din joined Dublin with 17 points.

Furman got a game high 22 points from Tierra Hodges, who also claimed high rebounding honors with 14 caroms.  Hodges' work on the glass pushed her over 1,000 rebounds (1,005) for her career — only the fourth player in Furman history to reach four figures in caroms.

Sydney James finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Stetson led 26-23 at halftime and used an 8-0 run to take a 46-33 advantage following an Alyssa Hargrove fast break layup with 2:07 to go in the third period.

Furman opened the fourth quarter with a Janay Outten three-point play and Hodges 3-pointer to pull to within 48-43, but the Hatters answered with a 10-0 run to take total command.  Wazeerud-Din's two free throws with 4:50 remaining put Stetson up 58-43.

The Paladins play at Kennesaw State on Monday.
