Greenville, S.C. – The Furman women's lacrosse team kicks off its 2021 season this weekend with a pair of road games against the East Carolina Pirates and Davidson Wildcats.

The Paladins head to East Carolina on Friday afternoon for a 3 p.m. contest and then travel to take on Davidson Sunday at 3 p.m.

The Paladins begin their seventh season as a program, all under the direction of head coach Rachel Whitten, after finishing last year's shortened season with a 3-4 overall record.

Furman was tabbed to finish in second place this season in the SoCon by the league's head coaches while Hannah Demis, Sydney Catts, Lauren Farber and Avery Whitehead were all selected Preseason All-Conference.

A total of ten starters return for the Paladins in Demis, Farber, Catts, Whitehead, Leah Nonnenmann, Kyra LaMotte, Ellie Roser, Meghan Deehan, Regan Lingo and Rachel Sindler. Furman also welcomes five freshman newcomers in Katelyn Sousa, Avery McIlwaine, Sophie Shaw, Sydney McClure and Caroline Swaim.

East Carolina finished 5-3 last season and ended the year with a 16-6 loss at 18th-ranked Duke. The Pirates were picked to finish fifth in the AAC Coaches' Preseason Poll and have two Preseason All-AAC selections in Nicole LeGar and Liz Blumthal. ECU is under the direction of fourth-year head coach Amanda Moore.

Davidson posted a 2-4 overall record in 2020 capped by a 17-8 loss at home to Lehigh. The Wildcats are projected to finish sixth in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll while returning two of their three leading scorers from last year in Anna West and Gianna New. Davidson is led by 13th-year head coach Kim Wayne.

The Paladins lead the all-time series over East Carolina 1-0 and trail Davidson 3-0.

Furman hosts Liberty in its home opener on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 12 p.m.
