Richmond, Va. – Hannah Demis finished with three goals and two assists to help lead the Furman women's lacrosse team to its third consecutive victory on Thursday afternoon with a 14-12 victory over the VCU Rams at Cary Street Field.
Furman improves to 3-2 on the season while VCU falls to 3-2 overall.
Demis led all players with a game-high five points on her three goals and two assists, and was one of five players to score at least two goals in the contest.
Hannah Dintino provided three points on two goals and one assist.
Meagan Beal,
Lindsey Kelly and
Sydney McClure all had two goals. Beal,
Sydney Catts and
Meghan Deehan each picked up three ground balls. Four different players won two draws while three others caused two ground balls apiece.
In goal, Deehan recorded a season-high nine saves to pick up the victory.
Kelsey McDonnell led the Rams with three goals, and Juliana George and Lauren Marosi both tallied three points. George had one goal and two assists, while Marosi posted two goals and one assist. Caroline Glenn compiled three ground balls and Maddie Berman won six draws.
Gillian Belfiore had 12 saves in goal for VCU.
Beal scored both of her goals within the game's opening 10 minutes with her last, coming at the 20:29 mark, tying the game at 3-3. The Rams registered three of the next four goals to take a 6-4 lead with 12:53 to go following Marosi's second goal of the game. The Paladins closed out the half on a 5-1 run over the final 10:28 to hold a 9-7 lead at halftime. Five different Furman players scored during the run including Dintino, McClure, Kelly,
Ellie Roser and
Kyra LaMotte. LaMotte's goal with 23 seconds remaining gave the Paladins a two-goal lead at intermission.
Furman continued its run into the second half with Dintino scoring 5:50 into the period, extending its lead out to 10-7. The teams traded the next eight goals over a stretch of almost 15 minutes. VCU got as close as two goals four times but the Paladins responded with a goal of their own each time. McDonnell cut the Rams' deficit down to 13-11 after her goal at the 8:51 mark. Kelly followed 34 seconds later to put Furman back in front by three at 14-11. Anna Koniencki's goal with 1:25 left in the contest put the final score at 14-12.
The Paladins concluded the contest with a 39-34 advantage in shots and 20-13 in ground balls, and forced VCU into 18 turnovers. Furman also limited the Rams to just 3-of-12 on free position attempts.
The Paladins are off until Saturday, March 20 when they travel to Elon for a 12 p.m. matchup.
