Furman Falls at No. 25 Elon, 13-9

LaMotte Scores Team-High Four Goals

Elon, N.C. – Mae McGlynn had a game-high five points on Saturday afternoon to lead the 25th-ranked Elon Phoenix to a 13-9 non-conference victory over the Furman women's lacrosse team at Rudd Field.

Furman falls to 3-3 on the season while Elon improves to 5-0 overall.

Kyra LaMotte led the Paladins with four goals, marking her fourth game this season scoring at least four times. Hannah Demis contributed three points on one goal and two assists, and also led the team with three draws. Meagan Beal and Sydney McClure both finished with two goals. Kaylee Coleman, Rachel Sindler and Hannah Dintino each caused one turnover.

In goal, Meghan Deehan recorded a season-high 11 saves and set a new career-best with six ground balls.

McGlynn compiled her five points on four goals and one assist for the Phoenix. Sara Bouwman and Cate Mackel both scored three goals, and Margaret Stephan added two. Meredith Curtin and Quinn Daly led the team with four ground balls apiece. Daly also collected a team-leading six draws and two caused turnovers.

Paulina DiFatta registered five saves and two ground balls in goal.

McClure scored the game's first goal less than three minutes into the contest, giving Furman the early 1-0 lead. Elon answered with four consecutive goals over the next 9:51, capped by McGlynn's goal, to go ahead 4-1 at the 17:38 mark. The Paladins responded with three straight goals of their own from Beal, McClure and LaMotte to tie the game at 4-4 with 7:28 to go. The teams exchanged the final four goals of the half, over the last 6:11, with Beal and LaMotte scoring for Furman. LaMotte's second goal of the game with 18 seconds left before halftime evened the score at 6-6.

The Phoenix opened the second half on a 4-1 run, covering the first 11:25, and built their lead out to 10-7 capped by McGlynn's free position goal with 18:35 left. Demis scored the Paladins' goal at the 23:40 mark to make the score 7-7. LaMotte cut Furman's deficit down to 10-8 with 16:43 remaining on Demis' assist. LaMotte later kept the Paladins within two, 11-9, with 12:11 to go after scoring her fourth goal of the game.

Elon held Furman scoreless over the game's final 12 minutes while receiving goals from Mackel and Stephan. Stephan's final goal with 10 seconds left put the final score at 13-9.

The Paladins concluded the game with 22 shots and 13 ground balls, while winning eight draws.

Furman returns to Paladin Stadium on Wednesday, March 24 to host Winthrop at 6 p.m.
