Shelby Basso tossed a five-hit shutout and redshirt-sophomore
Mackense Greico batted in five runs to lead Furman to a 10-0 victory over UNCW in the rubber game of a three-game weekend series Sunday afternoon at Boseman Field in Wilmington, N.C.
Basso (2-3) fanned eight batters and allowed just one walk over six innings for her first career shutout. The Paladins' offense exploded for 10 runs on 12 hits over six innings, led by Greico, who reached base four times with a single, double and two bases on balls.
Emily Bartlett went 3-for-4, while
Claire Ginder went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI.
Greico worked a bases loaded walk to get Furman on the board in the top of the first and Ginder followed with a two-run double to give the Paladins a 3-0 lead. Furman added four runs in the top of the fourth. Bartlett reached on a two-out infield single to load the bases and
Riley Ludlam drove in a run with a single to shortstop. Greico lined a single back up the middle to drive in two more runs and Ginder singled to center field to up the margin to 7-0.
In the top of the sixth,
Ashlee Lykins led off the frame with a double before Ludlam reached on an error and stole second base. Greico laced a double into the gap to plate two more runs and pinch runner
Marina Griffin later scored on a UNCW error to up the lead to 10-0.
Rylee Pate (0-5) suffered the loss for the Seahawks (3-13), allowing three runs on three hits in just an inning of work. Two UNCW reliever were tagged with seven runs on nine hits over five innings in the circle.
The Paladins (6-12) are back in action March 27-28, at the Lady Vols Challenge in Knoxville, Tenn. Furman will play a pair of games against both nationally-ranked Tennessee and Troy.
