First-Place Furman Rolls Past VMI, 6-0

Lagnerini Nets Two Goals For The Paladins

Greenville, S.C. – Four Paladins found the back of the net en route to a 6-0 Furman victory over VMI in Southern Conference men's soccer action on Senior Night Friday evening at Stone Soccer Stadium.

Freshman Jake Raine and sophomore Shaun-Chris Joash each tallied their fifth goal of the season to stake the Paladins to a 2-0 lead in the opening 16 minutes. Josh Hosie and Miles Fenton setup Raine for a shot into the lower left-hand corner at the 10:26 mark before Joash curled his shot into the far right-hand corner from the left side of the box at 15:37 on an assist from Sam Miller.

After an own goal upped the margin to 3-0 in the 64th minute, Furman got a boost from its reserves as Giovanni Lagnerini netted a pair of goals and freshman Zaye Zezulka scored his first goal as a Paladin. Lagnerini took a Dylan Lane pass on the left side of the box and tucked his shot away towards the far corner at the 73:38 mark. Less than four minutes later, Zezulka converted off of a pass from Garrett Singletary for his first collegiate tally. Lagnerini capped the scoring at 82:39 when he rounded the left side of the VMI defense and finished to the right corner past a charging goalkeeper.

"It was a great night to celebrate our seniors," said head coach Doug Allison. "We're excited to get the three points and a SoCon victory, and I'm really happy we were able to give some guys a rest and get playing time for so many young players tonight."

Ben Hale made three saves in goal before giving way to fellow senior Tommy Cissel in the 74th minute. Broden Schull stopped six shots in the loss for the Keydets.

Furman (6-1-0, 4-0-0 SoCon) managed a 26-6 advantage in total shots and 12-3 edge in shots on goal. The Paladins' six goals were their most since an 8-0 win over VMI (2-7-0, 0-4-0 SoCon) on October 13, 2018, at Stone Stadium.

Following a trip to Nashville, Tenn., to face Belmont in a crucial SoCon match on Tuesday, Furman returns home to host Wofford in the regular season finale on Thursday, April 1, at 7 p.m.
